I really feel this one. Growing up negative emotions weren’t ok. No one new how to treat them so they’re ignored or treated as bad. In my family, If I’m not happy I have to pretend to be or I get no connection.
And actually today (that’s what led me to this video) I showed I was sad to my mom, like really crushing sadness and needing to talk to her. I got stone-walled by her. she didn’t say anything. Picked her phone up and ignored me. I’m not afraid to say I cried at that rejection. She had no clue I had any tears sitting 2 seats from her or had no clue how rejected she made me feel. I felt like I didn’t exist. Then for the rest of the day she was talking to me but it felt like she wasn’t really talking to me (It felt like she was talking to herself or to someone else) because she wasn’t connecting to me. She was happy while at the same time I was holding back tears (also made me feel like I was going crazy.) It feels awful. It also feel quite scary.
(She has always coped with positive focus. When I think about it)
I usually meet her (and others) where she is at but couldn’t today and this crushed me. Sadly, I’m more aware of why I isolate and why the world has always felt unsafe to me.
