Finding Light in the Emotional Dark Age
Teacher and ritual and sexual abuse survivor Teal Swan shows people how to heal their hidden wounds and become their authentic selves in her new book, “The Completion Process”
Teal Swan was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico and came into the world experiencing a variety of intense intuitive abilities including clairvoyance, clairsentience, clairaudience and claircognizance. When her family moved to a remote national forest area in Utah during her childhood, word of Teal’s gifts spread quickly through the nearby conservative religious communities. Before long, a new family acquaintance took Teal and inducted her into a local cult at the age of six. For the next 13 years, she was ritually, sexually and emotionally tortured by her captor.
At the age of 19, she escaped and began the process of transforming the deepest darkness of her experiences into healing, bringing her shadows into the light. Now, through her workshops, YouTube channel offerings, a forthcoming documentary film and her new book, "Shadows Before Dawn: Finding the Light of Self-Love Through Your Darkest Times," Teal is helping people across the globe to overcome fears and past traumas to live full, authentic lives. The first part of her book tells the story of how she came to be where she is now; the second part of the book is Teal's Tool Kit to Self-Love, including practical tips and techniques for readers to explore.
The Emotional Dark Age
Addressing the parts of oneself that most need healing can be truly challenging, especially while our society exists in what Teal refers to as the Emotional Dark Age, “the age of ignorance relative to emotions.” She calls this ignorance a “great epidemic,” existing at the root of chronic illness and despair. Teal helps people to get back in touch with their emotional reality, creating healthy connections to feeling and expressing their emotions. This is relevant work for all people in this day and age, but especially for those who have experienced trauma.
From Surviving to Thriving
Healing from trauma is a process. It takes time and it can be incredibly difficult to know where to start. “The first thing that I would teach somebody who is dealing with trauma,” says Teal, “is to get back in touch with their emotions, to literally learn how to sink into them and sit with them and use their emotions as an access to heal the aspects of themselves that are still wounded. I would ask them to decide that the most important thing in the world is how they feel, and to make happiness the number one goal of their entire life. Now, that sounds very face value, but it's a lot more complicated than people would make it out to be because, obviously, if you're going to live according to happiness, you’ve got to stop living according to the things you think are going to make you happy and live according to how you feel instead, so your whole life will look different.”
Physical Health Begins with Emotional Health
People all over the world struggle with their health, from day-to-day aches and pains, to weight issues, to chronic illnesses and more. According to emotional expert and intuitive Teal Swan, the pain that we carry around with us from the past manifests as illness and disease in the body: “Most people who are alive in the world today have no idea that the very physical conditions that they're experiencing in their life are in fact a byproduct of thoughts and feelings, first and foremost. They're not identifying those things. What I do the most in my work—relative to everything including health, especially health—is this idea of shadow work, which is working with the subconscious mind, the aspects of you that are operating even when you're not aware of them.”
Taking the Fear Out of Shadow Work
Our shadow self, as Teal explains it, simply includes the parts of ourselves that we can’t see. She helps people to see those unseen places and heal them. “Essentially,” says Teal, “when you have wounds from emotional experiences that were painful and they're not properly dealt with or integrated, what will happen is that the energy of those emotions is going to manifest in your body.” This is why discovering and healing those hidden places is so important.
Learning to Love Your Whole Self
In her new book, “Shadows Before Dawn: Finding the Light of Self-Love Through Your Darkest Times,” Teal shares her incredible journey to loving herself completely. In doing so, she outlines a path that others can take to find their own self-worth and self-love. “All self-worth issues stem from one thought,” Teal says, “and that thought is, ‘I am not enough.’ You need to ask yourself, ‘How am I enough?’” By focusing on and accepting what we are, we can cultivate self-worth and, eventually, self-love.
